Chapter 25
|
This chapter is from Malachi 4. In Joseph Smith—History
1:36, Joseph tells us that the angel Moroni quoted part of the fourth chapter
of Malachi “with a little variation from the way it reads in our Bibles.”
Below I’ve copied the Malachi verses as quoted by Moroni and highlighted
major differences between quotes from Jesus of the same verses.
Also note that the verses in this chapter that Jesus quotes from Malachi are
verbatim as found in the KJV of Malachi 4 with the exception of punctuation
and two words in verse 2. Why did the angel Moroni cite these verses so
differently than Jesus?

1 For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven;
and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble; and
the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of Hosts,
that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
|
Joseph Smith—History
1:37
For behold, the day cometh that shall burn as an oven, and all the proud,
yea, and all that do wickedly shall burn as stubble; for they that
come shall burn them, saith the Lord of Hosts, that it shall leave them
neither root nor branch.

2 But unto you that fear my name, shall the Son of
Righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth and grow
up as calves in the stall.
|
In the LDS King James Version of Malachi 4:2, it is “Sun” instead of
“Son,” and it is “of the stall” instead of “in the stall.”
|
3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be
ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the
Lord of Hosts.
|
|
4 Remember ye the law of Moses, my servant, which I
commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel, with the statutes and judgments.
|
|
5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before
the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord;
|
Joseph Smith—History
1:38
Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the
hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful
day of the Lord.
|
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the
children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come
and smite the earth with a curse.
|
Joseph Smith—History
1:39
And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the
promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn
to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted
at his coming.
